Understanding Cellular Coverage

SWIFT is launching an independent regional study to better understand cellular service across Southwestern Ontario.

This work will help identify where service is strong, where gaps exist, and how connectivity can be improved over time. By using consistent, verifiable methods, the study will provide a clearer picture of real world coverage, helping to support more accurate, evidence based discussions with partners on future connectivity improvements.

Why This Matters

Many residents, businesses, and communities across Southwestern Ontario continue to experience inconsistent or limited cellular service, even in areas where coverage is expected. In many cases, reported coverage does not reflect real-world performance, creating uncertainty and frustration for those who rely on cellular connectivity in their daily lives.

As reliance on cellular services continues to grow, gaps in coverage can affect safety, economic activity, and access to essential services. Understanding where these gaps exist is a critical first step toward identifying practical, targeted solutions.

These gaps have real implications across the region. Reliable cellular connectivity plays a critical role in:

  • Staying safe and connected in emergencies
  • Supporting local businesses and economic activity
  • Traveling safely across rural and highway networks
  • Accessing everyday services and staying in touch

What We’re Doing

SWIFT is leading an independent study to better understand real world cellular service across the region.

This includes:

  • Conducting drive-testing to measure coverage
  • Collecting and analyzing data using consistent, evidence based methods
  • Building a clear picture of current coverage across Southwestern Ontario

What This Means

This is an early stage initiative focused on building a clearer understanding of current cellular service conditions across Southwestern Ontario. By establishing a reliable, evidence-based baseline, the study will help inform future discussions and potential solutions aimed at improving connectivity across the region.

As the study progresses, updates and key findings will be shared to keep partners, municipalities, and residents informed. For more information or to connect with the project team, please contact us.
