(Windsor, ON) December 16, 2020 – Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) has awarded a contract to Cogeco Connexion to expand high-speed fibre-optic broadband services to more than 190 underserved households, businesses and institutions within the City of Windsor.

“SWIFT is proud to partner with Cogeco Connexion as we continue to improve access to high-speed services across Southwestern Ontario,” said David Mayberry, SWIFT Board Chair. “Today’s newly announced project will not only deliver better broadband connectivity throughout the City, but the project will also connect an elementary school to provide more students with equitable access to digital resources and online opportunities.”

“We are very happy to collaborate with SWIFT on this project in the City of Windsor. This announcement is part of our ongoing objective to connect more and more homes and businesses to our best-in-class network. This time, close to 200 homes and businesses will now be able to benefit from our high speed internet services. We are proud to contribute again to our common goal of connecting unserved and underserved Ontarians to high speed internet, to enable economic recovery and a more inclusive growth, while continuing our market expansion,” said Matt Wickham, Vice-President and General Manager, Ontario Region, Cogeco Connexion.

SWIFT is leveraging approximately $570,000 in funding contributions received from its municipal partners to support the newly awarded project. Cogeco Connexion has also committed approximately $366,000 to the $936,000 joint venture which will deploy more than 12 kilometres of fibre-optic cabling to address broadband service gaps throughout the City. The project is expected to be completed with services fully available by mid-2022.

“The majority of residents living in Windsor have access to quality broadband services, but there are still a number of small pockets within the City where service is insufficient and lacking,” said Barry Field, Executive Director, SWIFT. “With today’s announcement we will work to bridge outstanding service gaps throughout the City by delivering future-proofed solutions to support online learning and the growth of local businesses.”

Today’s newly announced project is part of SWIFT’s $209 million Southwestern Ontario broadband expansion plan and is supported by funding contributions received from its municipal partners.
